Program Design

ICAN used human-centered design (HCD) to build upon its formative research findings to design, implement, and evaluate SI service delivery enhancements (Aim 2) in specific channels of Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda. HCD is an approach to understanding stakeholder needs and desires towards the creation of novel interventions. The ICAN co-design included the following six stages in Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda.

Following the design process in each country, we piloted the final pilot programs with our implementing partners and conducted a mixed methods evaluation of each pilot. Key outputs from the design and implementation phases are summarized below. Early evaluation results will be featured on the program evaluation page.

1. Kenya: A series of interventions were implemented to increase awareness of Kasha as a source of contraception, re-design the contraceptive webpage workflow for clients to navigate through contraceptive information, and offer care packages for the public to purchase bundled products at discounted rates.

2. Malawi: The Ndingathe pilot program seeks to improve accessibility and quality of health surveillance assistants (HSAs) contraception outreach services via the program components displayed in the following graphic.

3. Uganda: Nsobola / An atwero (“I-CAN”), is a peer mentorship program in Mayuge and Oyam districts that aims to promote women’s agency in making and acting on their own decisions related to pregnancy prevention as articulated in the below graphic.
